CHAPTER 2 INSTALLATION
Here is how to get GIM up and running quickly for the first
time. The automatic installation is recommended, but you can
do the manual installation instead if you choose.
AUTOMATIC INSTALLATION...
I Insert distribution diskette in A: or B:
II Type: A:INSTALL <ENTER> or B:INSTALL <ENTER>
III Follow the instructions as they appear on the screen.
IV To exit GIM, press F10 -- repeatedly, if necessary.
V To restart GIM, type "GIM". There are some other .EXE files
included with the GIM distribution, but you should never need
to run these; GIM will run these automatically, as needed.
MANUAL INSTALLATION...
I Create a subdirectory for GIM.
II Run the GIM_308.EXE self-extracting archive in that
directory to produce the following files:
GIM.EXE -- Executable program (run this!)
GIM3.EXE -- Executable program (don't run this!)
GIM3.OVR -- Overlay file (associated with GIM3.EXE)
GIM.PIF -- PIF file for use with Microsoft Windows
GIM.ICO -- GIM icon for use with Microsoft Windows
GIM.BMP -- GIM bitmap for use with Microsoft Windows
GIMMENU.GIM -- Program menus
GIMPRN.GIM -- Printer resource
GIMTPL.GIM -- LDS temple list
GIMCVT1.EXE -- Converts data from version 0 to version 1
GIMCVT2.EXE -- Converts data from version 1 to version 2
GIMCVT3.EXE -- Converts data from version 2 to version 3
VESA16.BGI -- VESA Super VGA Graphics driver
LINCOLN1.GD -- These are two sample GIM folders.
LINCOLN1.GF --
LINCOLN1.GI -- These need not be in the directory you
LINCOLN1.GN -- created in step one; they can be in any
LINCOLN1.GP -- directory.

LINCOLN2.GF
LINCOLN2.GI

LINCOLN2.GP
LINCOLN1.GED -- These are the GEDCOM files. These can
LINCOLN2.GED -- also be in any directory.
GIM*.DOC -- Documentation. These files may be in any
-- directory, but we recommend placing them
-- in the directory you created in step one.

GIMHLP.GIM -- Program help text. This file may be in
-- any directory, but we recommend placing it
-- in the directory you created in step one.

III To start GIM, type "GIM". GIM will run in black and white
until you tell it what colors you like. To do so, press
<shift-F7> from the first (Folder Area) screen.
IV To exit GIM, press F10 -- repeatedly, if necessary.
